Delighted to unveil our first music video animated by Aaron Brady. Hot Press are kindly premiering it for us! Watch and read all about it here.
EXCLUSIVE: Saramai Premiere New Video ‘Trees’
The Co. Meath trio share their stunning new song, and Hot Press is delighted to unveil the accompanying debut video.
The rising Irish band Saramai, continue to go from strength to strength. After conquering the Hard Working Class Heroes festival, the group now exclusively premiere a sensational animation video created by London-based animator, Aaron Brady.
The euphoric-alt-pop three piece, who formed in October 2015, consists of singer-keyboardist, Saramai Leech, guitarist, Cormac O’Keeffe, and drummer, Aimie Mallon.
At the beginning of the year, they recorded a live EP in two days at Attica recording studios in Donegal with renowned producer Tommy McLaughlin – who has worked with Villagers, Bell X1 and Soak.
Saramai talked to Hot Press about how the collaboration came about. “Aaron makes these strangely beautiful characters in his work,” explained Leech. “We have always loved his use of colour and the dark edge to his otherwise playful style. We were so delighted when he agreed to make our first video. We sent him the lyrics and gave him a very loose brief. We were absolutely over the moon with what he made for us.”
As regards the song ‘Trees’, the singer delved in to the genesis of the emotive and uplifting track. “I woke up one windy night about four in the morning, and I could see the trees swaying against the night sky through the sky light,” Saramai recalls. “The song really just spilled out in one piece. Thankfully, I had the sense to get up and write it all down. It’s taken me years to realise how important that is. Then, we worked on it as a band, until we could feel the trees swaying and the wind blowing.”
“Recently, we moved out to the countryside. It was a big change for me as I’m a townie. There are so many beautiful trees and creatures around where we live now, they were always bound to find a way into the music sooner or later.”
She added, “In a way, ‘Trees’ is about learning to trust in yourself and in something bigger than yourself.”
Saramai’s EP launch takes place at Whelan’s Oct 19. They are supported by Dublin-based singer-songwriter Rosa Nutty. Doors open at 8pm. Keep an eye on their Facebook, as more dates are yet to be announced.

We are having the best time out on the road. So far we have played The Sunflower in Belfast, Fealty’s in Bangor, Canalaphonic in Dublin, The Spirit Store and Classified records in Dundalk.
Today ‘Across the Line‘ have made our song ‘Trees’ Track for Day and said:
“The keening voice of Saramai Leech, an agitated piano and relentlessly hissing cymbals – what could possibly go wrong? From this portentious introduction, the song wows and wibbles and finishes as a huge invocation to some unguessable cosmic theme.”
Check out the whole thing here
Also here are some photo’s from Classified Records yesterday by the very talented photographer Inga.

Happy New Year! Started off the new year with my first international radio play on Radio France France Bleu. Listen back here (Scroll down to listen to the last show (re-écouter).) At the end of 2015 I had the hounour of jumping up on stage with The Evertides to sing a Neil Young song ‘Little Wing’. It was a beautiful night. Other guest performers included Sive, Miriam Donohue, Stephen James Smith, Adam Matthews and Fergal Scahill. Also I popped into The Sound Feed to record a new song
And a fabulous Christmas present came by way of this review from IndieMusic: Read it in French here : http://www.indiemusic.fr/2015/12/26/saramai-red-moon/ Or here is a rough translation: **************************************************************************************
[EP] Saramai – Red Moon by Fred Lombard the 26 December 2015 in Chronicles It is a floating music, soft and ethereal…. A beautiful simple disc, finished by the spontaneity and detectable fragility of her work…. Saramai – Red Moon It all starts with a few notes of piano keys …… and the caressing voice of Saramai Leech, a young artist from Navan, northwest of Dublin, just conquers and moves us. Her words, her lyrics, her silences and her breath is the result of a beauty that is sublime alone in the moment. With the solitary melody of “Fall A While” light becomes a companion, a guide in listening to these delicious minutes of escape. Saramai radiates from the heavenly beauty of her compositions. Her piano and voice alone sublimate the moment. With the shivering poetry (Butterfly Waltz), disturbing incandescence (Red Moon) and poignant melancholy (Return Again Soon), the first EP Saramai is great without claiming any excess. The fragile restraint, sensitive and evocative of “Red Moon” captivates and enlightens even in its most exclusive corners unite one voice to 88 keys. Touched irreparably heart. **************************************************************************************

Had a brilliant night jumping up with Red Queen Contest who opened up for The Lost Brothers in The Solstice Wednesday last week. It was a local sold out gig that saw Simon Fagan fly home from Berlin to play a set. Also the amazing Terry Woods of The Pogues fame joined the Losties for a few numbers and it was so beautiful. Last Sunday we played a sold out headline house gig! Tivoli House Concerts were fantastic hosts and event organisers. The room was full and everyone listened and then we mingled with mince pies! Also I am almost out of the first batch of CDs now! Tonight I join The Joyful Misadventures of Billy McGooley in Beggys of Navan for some fun covers and Christmas Cheer. Then *News Flash* this coming Tuesday I am honoured to be jumping up with the fabulous Evertides for their sold out Christmas Show. I’ll be giving a lesser known Neil Young song a twist with the help of the lassies. Here’s some pics of the house gig from last week

The #WildAtlanticWay was especially wild with Storm Dessie’s visit but it didn’t dampen the Other Voices Magic! It was the most exciting weekend for the band and I. We played the Imro Other Room on Saturday which was filmed for broadcast next year. On Sunday I played a solo set on the Music Trail which was an eclectic programme of stunning artists playing all over Dingle in courthouses, churches, cafes and bars. We got home late yesterday and went straight to rehearsals. Looking forward to this weekend’s headline sold out show in Rathgar with Tivoli House Concerts. Also some exciting Christmas news to follow.

It was performed in The Solstice Navan with a superb cast of mostly homegrown talent who have gone on to become professional performers (inlcuding Tommy Tiernan.) It was my first foray into sound design for theatre since college and I loved it. I will post some of the music I wrote for it soon. WOW…just watched The Shawshank Redemption again for the first time in years! Stunning. And then for some reason it reminded me of this other work of art which I had to google to find and read again for the first time in years. Posting this will make it hard to post my lyrics. What the hell… (In actual music news I am writing away and getting ready to release a single off the upcoming EP!) St Kevin and the Blackbird (1996) Seamus Heaney And then there was St Kevin and the blackbird. The saint is kneeling, arms stretched out, inside His cell, but the cell is narrow, so One turned-up palm is out the window, stiff As a crossbeam, when a blackbird lands and Lays in it and settles down to nest. Kevin feels the warm eggs, the small breast, the tucked Neat head and claws and, finding himself linked Into the network of eternal life, Is moved to pity: now he must hold his hand Like a branch out in the sun and rain for weeks Until the young are hatched and fledged and flown. * And since the whole thing’s imagined anyhow, Imagine being Kevin. Which is he? Self-forgetful or in agony all the time From the neck on out down through his hurting forearms? Are his fingers sleeping? Does he still feel his knees? Or has the shut-eyed blank of underearth Crept up through him? Is there distance in his head? Alone and mirrored clear in Love’s deep river, ‘To labour and not to seek reward,’ he prays, A prayer his body makes entirely For he has forgotten self, forgotten bird And on the riverbank forgotten the river’s name. ————————————————————————————————
